Sri
Lanka's ODI captain, Dasun Shanaka, has been sidelined from the ongoing World
Cup in India due to a thigh injury. In his place, Chamika Karunaratne, who was
on standby, has been drafted into the team.
This
injury is a setback for Sri Lanka, one of the four teams that have yet to
secure a victory in the World Cup.
"Karunaratne,
with 23 ODIs under his belt, has been named as a replacement for Shanaka, who
is unable to continue due to a right thigh muscle injury suffered during Sri
Lanka's match against Pakistan on October 10th. The recovery period for this
injury is estimated at three weeks," as stated by the ICC, with the
Technical Committee endorsing the change.
Kusal
Mendis, who has been demonstrating strong leadership with the bat for Sri Lanka
and holds the position of vice-captain, is poised to assume the role of
captain.
Shanaka's
unavailability creates a chance for Karunaratne, who hasn't participated in a Sri
Lankan ODI since March of this year.
